As mentioned in our post last week, two couples from “Love is Blind”, Season 7,
contemplated getting prenuptial agreements. Though these couples did not get married,
and in turn, did not sign prenups, if they had, the accelerated timeline and pressure of
relationships in Love is Blind may have been reason to call the prenups into question.
Prenups can be deemed invalid by a Wisconsin Court for a few reasons, including one
party failing to provide a fair and reasonable disclosure of their property or financial
obligations to the other, or one party signing involuntarily. If you’ve seen the show, you
know Leo continually mentions to his prospective partners that he has received a
sizable inheritance. But no one seems to know just how wealthy Leo really is. Had Leo
and Brittney sought out a prenup, Leo would have had to be extremely clear about what
his financial situation actually is. Otherwise, he could risk Brittney challenging the
prenup during a divorce proceeding if she learns he was not transparent at the time of
signing.
In Marissa and Ramses situation, Marissa’s mother was withholding her blessing, and
even threatening Ramses with acts of violence should they marry without a prenup. Had
the couple then decided to get a prenup, at the time of divorce Ramses would have had
an argument to invalidate the prenup on grounds of coercion or duress. He could claim
he did not sign it voluntarily, but rather only to avoid harm from Marissa’s mother.
When it comes to making solid prenuptial agreements, it is best for both parties to read
and understand the contract when emotions are stable and there is ample time to
negotiate the terms. The whole premise of Love is Blind, which throws contestants into
high stakes rapid relationships, may make it difficult to form rock solid prenups.
